Get the Freebies Ep. 1: Page 1 by Jamie Hewlett & Matt Wakeham
This is believed to be a print quality copy of the black and white linework which has been painted/coloured and finished as the final published page by Jamie Hewlett and then hand lettered on an acetate overlay.
In the 1990s Jamie would typically photocopy his inked line work onto a marker-friendly board before adding finishes and colour, rather than working directly on his original inked artwork.
Iconic first page of Get the Freebies with Jamie Hewlett attempting to pitch his idea for a 'Get the Freebies' T.V. show to a pair of television producers. In his pitch, Hewlett describes the Freebies: Burk, "a big stupid gorilla"; Marlon, the "small and effeminate" one; and Jimmy, the leader who "has a basketball for a head," and how they are all serving a fifteen-year sentence in prison.
Get the Freebies is seen to be a stepping stone towards the later creation of Gorillaz by the same creative team. The story was later made into Phoo Action a TV pilot produced by BBC.
Page was purchased from the director of Bananaz (2008) the Gorillaz Movie. This is one of the very few pages Jamie has let go from the story.
